Sources of Water Damage
Water damage can come from a variety of sources. While you never want to find water in your property, some situations are much worse than others. If you do find water in your home or business, then knowing what type of damage you are looking at can help you to make the best decisions in the early stages of the process.
Your best situation involves clean water. It might come from an overflowing bathtub, extreme rains leaking through a roof, or leaky pipes bringing water into your home. Clean water is generally safe and doesn’t have dangerous levels of bacteria or other pathogens.
If you have small amounts of clean water, you may be able to clean it yourself. For large amounts, however, it is best to call in professionals to make sure that everything is thoroughly dried. Any moisture left behind can cause mold to develop later on.
Gray water is more serious than clean water, although it is not likely to cause major health problems. It often comes from dishwasher and clothes washer drainage or water drained from sinks. It might contain low levels of bacteria but usually doesn’t pose a serious health hazard. It can’t be used for drinking because of soap residues and other impurities, but is often recycled and used for irrigation and other purposes in areas where water is scarce.
When you are dealing with small amounts of gray water you may be able to clean it yourself, although you should be sure to sanitize the area completely afterwards. Like clean water, incomplete drying can cause a future mold problem. Large amounts should be handled by professionals.
The worst type of water damage is caused by black water. It can carry large amounts of pathogens like bacteria and fecal matter. Often, this type of water comes from backed up toilets or burst and leaking sewage pipes. It can also come from severe flooding if there is decaying material in the floodwaters.
Black water should never be handled by the home or business owner. It can be very dangerous, especially to young children and people with compromised immune systems. Professionals use a variety of protective equipment such as gloves, waterproof or disposable clothing, air filter masks, and even respirators in extreme situations. Even small amounts can be dangerous. In addition to the risk of mildew and mold that can arise from clean and gray water, potentially dangerous bacterial colonies could develop if there are any contaminants left behind.
