Fire Damage Reconstruction: The Importance of New Smoke Alarms

Earlier this month we set our clocks back an hour to extend the amount of daylight during our waking hours.  Daylight Savings Time is a minor inconvenience for a few days while we adjust to the new time period.  For many it is a necessity as the extended daylight leaves more time for farmers to work in the fields.  Home contractors and other careers that require a workforce to be outdoors enjoy the longer periods of sun as well.  Truly, it doesn’t take much to adjust to the new time and the benefit of the fall is the extra hour of sleep you feel you get.

Many recommendations have come up over the years as using Daylight Savings Time as a reminder to complete a project on your to-do list.  However, none are as important as checking your smoke alarms.  At the minimum, every household should have working smoke alarms:

  • On all levels of your home
  • In every bedroom
  • In the kitchen

Additionally, it is imperative to check these alarms monthly to ensure the batteries are performing their job.  One topic often taken for granted is the amount of time you’ve owned the smoke alarms.  Manufacturers recommend that a smoke alarm is replaced every 10 years.  You may think that as long as you replace the batteries every year that a new alarm is not needed; yet, you’d be wrong.

Changing technology, advancements in technology, and fire prevention awareness are all reasons to take notice of the date of expiration on your smoke alarm.  Most companies stamp on the back of the alarm the date the alarm was produced.  If your alarms are over 10 years old there is an increased risk of the unit malfunctioning when you need it the most.

Rather than take a chance and hope it works, you’ll have peace of mind that your home’s early warning system is up to code and functioning as it should.  The seconds the alarm provides in warning you are precious seconds needed to get you and your family to safety when a fire occurs.

No one can predict when a fire will break out, or the intensity in which it will burn.  However, you can take steps to provide a safe environment for your family and home.  If you do experience a fire, know that our team of professionals at LaPointe Construction and Board-Up Service have over 50 years of experience providing Fire Damage Restoration services to our neighbors in need.
