Fire Damage Reconstruction: Be Prepared

September is National Preparedness Month, so grab your coffee, settle in, and let’s go over a few things you can do to be prepared.  The idea behind National Preparedness Month is to make sure you have open conversations with family and friends in the event of a disaster.   A disaster could be a fire contained to your home, or something much more monumental like a flood, area-wide storm, or man-made event.

  1. Start with a conversation. Talk with family members, neighbors, and friends to discuss how you can be prepared.  They more open you are, the easier it will be to face a catastrophe.
  2. Utilize a group texting app so you can stay in touch with everyone after an emergency.
  3. Determine central meeting places near your home as well as accessible by everyone should people become separated and unable to call for help.
  4. Devise a plan to safely evacuate your home in the case of a fire or flood. Follow issued safety statements if available and have your own plan.  Practice at least one time each year so everyone understands the plan.
  5. Pack a first aid kit or survival kit that includes important documents, medication, and any other items you may need. This may be best kept in your car or near an exit.
  6. Understand your insurance policy. Take the time now to meet with your insurance provider to best understand your coverage.
  7. Take pictures of important documents and email them to yourself along with phone numbers.
  8. Don’t rely on personal phones or your home computers to get you through tough times.

The more you plan ahead, the more you’ll be prepared should any disaster ever strike.  For example, in the event of a fire, you should have an escape route for every person in the household as well as pets.  Immediately call 911 and meet at your pre-determined spot, whether it be across the street or at the neighbor’s house.

Once the fire is out, you should have all the necessary tools readily accessible to you.  You can visit a friend or library to retain important documents from your email and have more control over the situation at hand.

At LaPointe Construction Board Up Service, we understand how the first few hours after a fire can be difficult to navigate.  If you’ve planned ahead, you’ll be much more prepared to tackle the job in front of you.  You’ll have access to insurance information, personal identification, household bills and more.  LaPointe, then, can help with the cleanup.  Our Fire Damage Reconstruction professionals can clean up the fire damage and restore your home to how it was.  Our reconstruction crew has the skills, tools, and expertise to rebuild your home.
